Artists

Sam Clayton, artist

Sam Clayton is a New York based visual artist who over decades of practice has evolved from returning to the early roots of classical representational art to finding visual poetry inherent in the materials and colors one uses, as is evident in his recent “abstract” work. His creative output has primarily manifested itself in the form of painting, book making and sculpture. His practice is a search to find the visual poetic moment. He utilizes his knowledge from years of studio practice and his cultivated awareness to recognize and allow chance discoveries, “accidents,” to become part of and help form each work. His hope is that the distinction between inner vision and outer manifestation becomes pure experience.

John Dew, Peter's one true love

John Dew was born in 1944 in Santiago de Cuba, but moved to England at age three. He received his B.A. at Pratt Institute in New York, and was later apprenticed to Walter Felsenstein and Wieland Wagner. His freeland work from 1977 to 1982 took him to Kiel, Mannheim, Hanover and Basel where he mounted several productions, as well as a Ring Cycle and various Mozart operas. In 1982, he was appointed director of productions and artistic director of the Bielefeld Opera, where he remained until 1995. His work there included a cycle of 40 rediscovered works which had been banned by the Nazis. After 1986, he directed productions at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Staatsoper Hamburg, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Houston Grand Opera, the Wiener Staatsoper, Oper Leipzig, the Zurich Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, and the State Opera Prague. He was artistic director at the Theater Dortmund from 1995 to 2001.  In appreciation for his services to the French nation, he has been honored with the title “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts de des Lettres.” In 2012 he was awarded the Carl Orff prize for his dedication to producing the works of Carl Orff.

Adriana_small

Adriana Furlong is a writer and artist based in New York City.  She works in the ground between vernacular and notational history to excavate residual memories, bodies and narratives that have been forgotten, lost and buried.

Furlong’s work has been shown at The Border Project Space and Undercurrent Gallery in New York as well basic space in Miami. Her work has been reviewed by Musee Magazine and Teeth Magazine, and her writing is published at The Brooklyn Rail and Dovetail Magazine.

Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Bettina Nelson is a Philadelphia-based artist whose practice prioritizes paper-based works that thoughtfully yet unselfconsciously combine abstraction, figuration, and the possibilities of the provisional. Her colorful mixed-media collages take place in the structure of an open book, with the facing pages offering the format of diptychs and suggesting a continuing story that will always remain unseen. These collages deploy non-local color and the ambiguity of abstract forms and gestures, while also suggesting the specificity of a certain place and time. Both Nelson’s collages and drawings evoke the suspension of the self in the subconscious world of ideas and stories and make analogies to the feelings of passing through a dream or being on the brink of a memory. Nelson holds a B.F.A. in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Stefano Paci is an architect practicing in New York City. He is committed to making architecture which not only improves the daily experiences of the direct users, but also enriches the surrounding urban context. In over three decades working with award-winning firms Mitchell/Giurgola Architects, Pei Cobb Freed and Partners, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, and Rogers Partners, he has contributed to the design and execution of a variety of building types in cities across the globe. Stefano has a B.A. and M.Arch. from Columbia University and an M.A. in Art History from the New York University Institute of Fine Arts. He is a licensed architect in both New York State and Massachusetts, and now increasingly divides his time between New York City and Umbria, Italy.

Stuart Shils is a contemporary American painter who also works in three-dimensionality. Born in 1954, in Philadelphia, PA, Shils studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Seymour Remenick and Arthur De Costa. The artist has cited the work of Giotto, Duccio, Lorenzetti and Piero della Francesca as important influences in his development as a visual artist. Beginning in 1994 he spent 13 summers working on the northwest coast of Ireland, an extended painting campaign described in the PBS documentary, Ballycastle. Shils has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, David and Langdale, and Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in New York as well as in Philadelphia, Tel Aviv, Boston, Richmond, LA, San Francisco and Cork, Ireland. He was the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and an Academy Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York.  Shils lives and works in Philadelphia and teaches at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, other venues around the country and also internationally.

Family

Myra's husband Michael Furlong 2

Michael Furlong has ideas about how people fly, drive, ride, live, and embrace their dreams. And he’s sold those ideas to Ariat, Lending Club, AAA, Kaiser Permanente, Schwab, Qantas, Toyota, and American Express in a career that has spanned eleven agencies in four countries. He has ideas about technology, too. And those ideas helped change the businesses of IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Microsoft. They also moved him to San Francisco. In 2012, Michael started a new marketing/production company called SLAP–a wake up call for your brand: a team of storytellers, designers, and strategists who create powerful content and help connect people to the soul of a brand. When he’s not solving an advertising problem, he’s either growing something in his vegetable garden, painting in his backyard art cave,  or trying to put a ball in the back of a net.

In 1983 Mary completed her B.A. in History of Art from Pomona College and in 1988 attained an M.A.(except for her thesis paper) in History of Art at Boston University. After Piero’s death in 1989, Mary, Chris, Stefano and Myra created the Pierfranco Paci Scholarship Fund at Commonwealth School in Boston in his memory.

Dr. Pier F. Paci, a pathologist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston who taught at Harvard Medical School, died of pancreatic cancer on February 15, 1989 at his home in Brookline, Mass. He was 58 years old.  Dr. Paci was born in Assisi, Italy, and attended Liceo Classico there.  In 1958, he received his medical degree from the University of Florence, specializing in the diagnosis of breast cancer and OB-GYN tumors. In 1964, after six years of residency at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital, he returned to Italy to teach and work in the Bari University Hospital Department of Pathology, and then at the Regina Elena Cancer Institute in Rome.  In 1968, he transferred to Boston to serve at the Beth Israel Hospital.  In early 1972, he returned to Italy for a six-month period at the Pisa University Hospital.  He then finally settled in the U.S.— working first at the Cambridge Hospital, and then moving to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1974.  In addition to his highly respected acumen in analyzing biopsies and diagnosing cancerous cells, he was an avid reader of European history, art history, and literature, and was an aficionado of salsa, jazz, opera, symphonic, and choral music.
